As
Director of Salem's Parks and Recreation, Denise Newkirk's
goals are to keep the City's parks safe, clean, and in good
working order. As the cornerstone of her efforts, she encourages
good sportsmanship among participants in the sports programs,
as well as among their parents and coaches.
Her efforts will focus on finding good coaches,
assistants, umpires, referees, league directors, and scorekeepers
who are excellent
role models for the City's youth, and who display a positive
attitude toward learning and achieving both on the field
and off. Denise feels strongly that sports can be good training
to teach time management and respect for others in preparation
for adult life.
In the management of her department's program,
she strives to include activities for all age groups under
the umbrella
of the Salem Parks and Recreation Department. She’s
always open to new ideas – and interested in finding
ways to improve the old ones.
Denise is married and has five children. Three
daughters played college level sports, (Hanover College and
Bellarmine University), where they graduated. Her son is
an I.U. graduate and is currently attending law school in
Jacksonville Florida. Her youngest daughter, Annie, is a
Sophomore at
Salem High School.
