John has been employed with the City of Salem since May 1979. His major responsibilities include, but not limited to, the operation and maintenance of the city’s 50 miles of sanitary sewer mains and twenty-two sanitary sewer lift stations. John also maintains Salem’s storm sewer system. Additional responsibilities include assisting Terry Pennington in the daily operation of the Water Pollution Control Facility.

John has been married to the former Debbie Perkins for 31 years. They have two children, Greg Smedley and Rebecca Archibald. They have a new granddaughter named Gracelynn Archibald.

In John’s off-time he enjoys car racing, camping, rebuilding cars and travelling.
