Dollar General Store helps collect for Animal Shelter

Thanks to the generosity of Washington County residents, the Salem Animal Control and the Washington County Humane Society have received over a thousand cans of dog and cat food. Shoppers at the Salem Dollar General Store have been asked to purchase a can of food as they check out and many have complied.“It’s been a great turnout,” said Store Manager Donna Marshall, adding that they have had to unload the large box of donations twice.She said the store decided to do this for the animal shelter as a sales initiative and a way to give back to the community and it has went very well.Animal Control Officer Rick Stewart said they are very grateful to everyone who has purchased food.“It’s unbelievable how much we have received so far and we are only halfway through the month,” he said.The Dollar General Store will continue collecting for the shelter and the humane society through the month of September.
