The Heart of Salem organization is now in a waiting game . . . hoping to hear in September whether or not they are the recipients of a $400,000 grant.
“It’s all or nothing,” said Carol Brough, president of the group.
If the money is received, the group will use the funds to update all the sidewalks on the square, as well as one block outside of the square. They will also replace the benches on the square and the planters. With the money leftover, they will purchase new trashcan receptacles.
The grant is from the Office of Community and Rural Affair’s Main Street Revitalization Program of the State Community Development Block Grant program. The program is funded by Title 1 of the Federal Housing Community Development Act of 1974, as amended. The funds from this grant are to be used for a community development project that will include the following: streetscape improvements around the courthouse square to include sidewalk improvements, installation of lighting, historical markers, landscaping and urban trees, benches, flowers, etc.
Brough said if the grant is received, they will get started on the projects in Spring 2015.
