Bicentennial Events Announced

The plans for the Salem-Washington County Bicentennial celebration are coming together. A list of activities has recently been released, with a garden tour planned from Saturday, June 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Bicentennial Garden Tour will include seven gardens. Tickets are $10 a piece.

On the day of the celebration, September 27, there will be a Mayor’s Brunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the American Legion Post 41 located at 209 S Main Street.

Activities on the square include a petting zoo, Celebrations of Southern Indiana and vendors from noon to 9 p.m.



A parade, beginning at the bingo hall, will start at 2 p.m.

The opening of the time capsule will take place at 4 p.m. at Salem Public Library. Items in the time capsule will be on display immediately following the ceremony.
There will be a renewal of vows at 6 p.m. and fireworks will end the evening at 9 p.m.

On Sunday, September 28, Tri Kappa will hold a home tour of various homes around the area. There will be a children’s birthday party on the courthouse lawn at 2 p.m. with old-fashion games, activities provided by PCA, Salem Park and Rec and the Salem Public Library. Music will be provided by WSLM. Vendors will also be on the square from 12 to 5 p.m.

Other activities include Homemakers Demonstration Day at the pioneer village on Thursday, Sept. 25, from 1-5 p.m. and a play titled “This is the Way it Was” directed by Daniel Main on Sept. 22 and 23 at 7 p.m.

H & R Bakery will be selling Bicentennial Cookies every Friday through the Bicentennial weekend.
