SOAR! seeks new tutors, training held on two Saturdays

Washington County SOAR! Director, Erica Schmidt announced that Blue River Woods will be sponsoring the next tutor training.  Blue River Woods is SOAR’s newest community partner. BRW recently made a donation of $2,500 to help fulfill the mission of SOAR: increase literacy by promoting and providing educational resources for adults and families in our community. A portion of the money will be used to provide a summer tutor training for volunteers wanting to tutor adults with SOAR!.

The training will be held on two Saturdays: Saturday, August 24 and Saturday, August 31 both from 9:30-4:00 pm with a half hour allowed for a lunch, which will be provided at the Community Learning Center, classroom A.  Tutors who complete the 12-hour training will receive a free six month membership to ProLiteracy.org and a tote bag with tutoring supplies.  There is no fee to attend.

The training will cover characteristics of adult learners, strategies for teaching various aspects of literacy, and practice using the materials.  Hands on lesson planning is also included.

Tutors and students will be matched on their availability and goals.  Due to the individualized nature of the program, tutoring time and location is set by the tutor and student. Tutors and students usually meet once a week for 1 – 1 ½ hours a week.  All tutoring is done in a private public place, such as the Learning Center, library or SOAR! office.  Tutors never transport students.

SOAR! (Success & Opportunity At Reading) is the only non-profit organization in the community that provides free one-on-one tutoring for adults.  By setting up a network of volunteer tutors who will partner with adult learners, SOAR! can show adults that reading presents a whole world of opportunities that they have been missing. Many adults seeking GED's, jobs, or job promotions find SOAR!’s services to be helpful as well.

For more information or to register for these free classes, call the SOAR! office at 812-896-1515 or email info@washingtoncountysoar.org. Information can also be found on SOAR’s website at www.washingtoncountysoar.org.   Those interested in receiving tutoring or donating to SOAR! should also contact the local office. SOAR! is a non-profit,  501c3 organization.
