Rookie Basketball is back at the YMCA! Using modified rules and lowered hoops in a non-competitive environment, children can learn the fundamentals of basketball. Sportsmanship and fun are emphasized in this league, with each player getting equal playing time. Teams will meet Sunday afternoons at the Salem High School Auxiliary Gym for practice and game time beginning January 12th and going through February 16th. The YMCA will provide team t-shirts and a participation prize at the end of the season.
“Getting our children involved in team sports early is an important way to build their leadership and cooperation skills, sense of belonging, and also a great way to work on developing gross motor skills,” said Youth First Director, Rosie Morehous. “Giving our Youth the opportunity to have fun and learn the fundamentals of a sport—so important to our local community—is something that we are very proud to offer from the Washington County Family YMCA.”
This year, Rookie Basketball will have the added pleasure of partnering with all three County Varsity Basketball Teams! The Eastern Musketeers, Salem Lions, and West Washington Senators will have some of their STAR players coming out to share skills, knowledge, and tricks of the trade with our budding atheletes.
“We look forward to partnerting with all three School Corporations to empower their Youth in a mentoring role,” said Morehous, “It is important for our children to be able to see the positive impact that sports and involvement can make in their lives as they grow.”
Registration is now open for this program that serves boys and girls in Kindergarten-2nd grade. Cost for this 6 week program is $40 for members and $55 for nonmembers. As always, the YMCA’s values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility will be modeled and encouraged throughout each practice and game time as we focus on new friendships, personal growth, and fun!
