Salem is located in scenic Southern Indiana just 35 miles north of Louisville, Kentucky and less than 100 miles south of Indianapolis, Indiana. Salem is a great place to live and make a living. The City of Salem Utilities office accepts payments for city water, wastewater and garbage collection. The City of Salem Utilities Office accepts the following payment methods:
Make your payment online:
Click on the “VIEW / PAY UTILITY BILL” button below. First time users will have to register their account. Once you have registered, you can log in each month and make your payment. Please note that there is a convenience fee for using a debit, credit, or check payment card. The fee varies depending on which service you choose. Auto Debit is available also and customers can choose to go paperless if desired.
Make your payment in person:
We accept cash, checks, and money orders as well as credit and/or debit card payments. If a credit or debit payment is being made in the office, the customer must present a valid picture ID.
When making a payment in person our customers can use the drive up window or use our drop box. The drive up window hours are 8:00am to 4:00pm Monday - Friday. The drop box can be used 24 hours a day 7 days a week. If making a cash payment and using the drop box, we request the money and billing card be placed in a sealed envelope. Please make sure customer number is on check payments. The drop box and drive up window is located on the east side of the building.

Q: What are your operating hours?
A: 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. This includes all holidays and emergency incidents. Our headquarters is staffed 24/7 also.
Q: How do I contact an animal control person?
A: Through our agency. If you have an animal control issue please contact us and we will advise the animal control officer.
Q: What hours are the Animal Control Shelter open?
A: Monday through Friday 4P.M. - 6P.M. Saturday from 8A.M. - 1P.M.
Q: If I receive a traffic ticket, who do I contact?
A: Contact the Traffic Court Division at (812) 883-1634. Their hours are Monday through Friday from 9A.M. - 4P.M.
Q: If I want to fish from a boat at Lake Salinda or Lake John Hay what do I need?
A: A valid Indiana fishing license and a City Lake Permit. The lake permit can be purchased at the City Clerks office Monday through Friday from 8 A.M. - 4P.M.. All other hours the permit can be purchase at the front lobby of the police department.
Q: What is the Indiana law concerning seat belts?
A: Indiana has a standard or primary seat belt law. You can be stopped and ticketed for failing to wear your seat belt.
Q: What is the Indiana law concerning child restraints?
A: Any child up to and including children seven years of age must be properly fastened and restrained, according to the child restraint manufacturer’s instructions, by a child restraint system. All youths eight years old until they reach their 16th birthday must be properly restrained in a child safety seat or safety belt in all vehicles, in all seating positions, including vehicles with pickup truck plates. It is strongly reccomended all children be placed in the rear seat of the vehicle where it is safest. This law takes effect on July 1, 2005.

A: Persons under the age of 18 are required to wear a helmet and eye protection. Persons operating a motorcycle with a motorcycle learners permit, regardless of age, are also required to wear a helmet. Thanks go to the many volunteers, businesses, and organizations helping the Salem Parks and Recreation Department throughout the year. The Salem Parks & Recreation includes the following parks and recreation facilities open to the public.
DePauw Park and Riley’s Place Playground
A public shelter is available for rental within DePauw Park. To reserve the DePauw Park Shelter contact the Salem Parks and Recreation Office at Ph#812-883-2895. The shelter is perfect for family reunions and gatherings.

Salem Community Park:
Community Park is alive with activity with T-Ball games, Youth baseball and adult softball leagues almost every evening and weekend. If you would like to reserve a field please contact the Parks Dept.

Customer Service is the department's motto and something each of its members takes seriously. Not only does the department provide fire protection, it also responds to all injury accidents within the area, provides first-responder service in conjunction with the local EMS service, installs and checks smoke detectors in local businesses and industry to provide emergency preparedness training and inspections.
Salem's Fire Department consists of 9 professional career firefighters and 3 part-time firefighters who are supported by a staff of 20 volunteer firefighters. Career firefighters undergo daily training programs in order to respond to any emergency in the community.
Services provided for the public include:
- Smoke detector program: We have a program that if you are having trouble or just curious if your smoke detector is working properly we will come to your residence and inspect the detector for you at no cost. We also offer free smoke detectors to families that do not have them or may not be able to afford one.
- Carbon Monoxide check: if you feel that you may have a problem always call the fire department. We have a carbon monoxide detector that we will bring to you residence or place of business and check to make sure the air quality is good.
- Fire Prevention: During fire prevention week in October we visit the Schools and preschools to help educate the children on the hazards of fire and what to do in case of one. We also do station tours for them so they can see what we do on a daily basis. These visitations and station tours can be scheduled for anytime of the year.

Smoke Detectors:
The Salem Fire Department wants to remind everyone that when the time changes in the spring and fall to change the battery in your smoke detectors. Most smoke detectors use a 9 volt battery and are easy to change.
While you are changing the battery, take time to do a visual inspection of the smoke detector and check for obvious signs of wear or damage. Remove any dust or debris from the smoke detector. This may cause the smoke detector to malfunction or possibly not operate at all.
Each home should have at least one working smoke detector on each level and inside all bedrooms if you sleep with your doors shut.
We also recommend that you test your smoke detectors at least once a month. This is done by pressing a small test button located on the face of the detector. If a smoke detector is not working properly, remove it and replace it with a new unit.
The Salem Fire Department will provide you with a new detector if you cannot afford one or answer questions concerning installation or maintenance of smoke detectors.
